The Boggs gave us another opportunity to feel like the world is shrinking when they stopped by the studio on a Friday afternoon – June 8 – just two days before we welcomed The National and The Maccabees in for sessions. The Brooklyn band had played in Chicago the night before, with our buddies from Sound Team at one of the best damn clubs in America – Schubas. Peter Hale, the band’s drummer, quickly sought out the control room when they arrived to pass along some well wishes from Bill Baird and the ST crew. As things were supposed to work out, the Teamers were going to stop by this very afternoon as well, but as Chicago was the last stop on the tour, they decided they’d just high-tail it home to their flooding home state – probably to check for water in their basements. Almost two months afterwards, we’re still in awe of the firepower that the band brought to this session in the middle of an afternoon. More so, Hale’s gigantic height has us contemplating allocating one doorframe in the studio for the Daytrotter Session Drummer Height Registry, whereby all freakishly lanky drummers will be required to stand for a measurement. The Manute Bol-ishness of some of these drummers is phenomenal and somehow, by the luck of the odds, most of the tall boys are stuck behind the drum kit so their knees can be seen crooked and skying above their high hats. Co-leaders thus far are Hale, Jolie Holland’s touring drummer Jim, Menomena’s Danny Seim and former drummer Nick Stumpf of The French Kicks. No winner can be determined until the doorframe has been officially established and recognized, an encore session takes place and even then, the contest shall go on infinitely until the day when drummers stop growing. That will be never, sirs and madams. – Sean Moeller
