Baby Teeth: A Song Blog By A Maker Of Songs

The last new thing we heard from Abraham Levitan of Baby Teeth was a song called “Snake Eyes,” heard no where else in recorded form but in their exceptional session. He was getting “fucked” by this spoken of roll of the dice and the song sounded like it was being teased by a horror film’s knife slashing (ree-ree-ree) and tortured by torturous luck. The last thing we heard from his prior to the release of the session was that he was in an airport on his way to some Latin American country. It might have been there that he decided to do something with all of the excess songs that he’s continually, hyperactively working on there in his Chicago digs. Just recently, the main man of the band that could detonate a room in a single bound, with one little all together note, started a song blog with the intention of releasing a new, roughly hewn song – in various stages of development, to the adoring public. These song releases happen on Mondays, a decision, no doubt to give those trudging back to work something worthwhile to pay attention to soon after that first coffee as they fire their computers up for another long week in the cubicle. Today’s offering is a tune entitled “Is This Love?” and the written commentary makes itself into a disclaimer, citing that it is in no way a Bob Marley cover song. It comes across as a scene from Neil Young’s “Greendale” and you could almost picture a wily-haired Young slumped over a guitar just humping away at the chugging riff and the sentiment involved. Levitan’s discourse is alike John Darnielle’s wonderfully written blog, Last Plane To Jakarta, just with more mentions of rustic rock and roll icons than heavy metal ballers. More Baby Teeth material is never bad news.

Lovely as the blog is, Levitan is also an accomplished fine artist. The piece of art accompanying this piece is a self-portrait. It leaps off the page. It’s as if he’s in the room with you. – Sean Moeller
