Liela Moss has been popping handfuls of almonds and been swimming in episode-after-episode of the finest programming extra pay channel cable television has to offer. The Duke Spirit lead singer has also been opening the night for the fiery Eagles of Death Metal every night across the American landscape and will soon do the same for Mercury Rev. Her voice on the recently released new single “Lassoo” reminds us of the power and vibrato of Grace Slick via the Jefferson Airplane days, venomous and no-nonsense is a way that hurts so good. It’s a voice and a sound that’s full of black magic and midnight charm, taking us right up to the edge of the world where bad things happen, though they might not this tonight. She and the rest of this newly made four-piece leave us strung out and shaking on Neptune. The band checked in with a Lasso’d segment this week and as a special treat for Daytrotter readers, they’ve made one pair of tickets for five different upcoming shows available for the taking. All you have to do is sign up for the Daytrotter newsletter and then shoot an e-mail to teamdaytrotter@gmail.com with the words Duke Spirit Tickets in the subject line and the show you’d like to attend, along with your favorite album of the year in the body. Winners will be announced this Friday as you’re all out shopping for Christmas presents. Tickets are available for these shows:
11/30 — Nashville, Tenn.
12/2 — Indianapolis, Ind.
12/3 — Columbus, Ohio
12/11 — Chicago, Ill.
12/12 — Minneapolis, Minn.

Here are 5 things that have inspired us or piqued our curiosity this week
One — Watching Eagles Of Death Metal Every Night. They rock like crazed motherfuckers and make most young bands look like a girl guide outing. Watching Joey Castillo makes you want to play drums. That’s enough inspiration when you feel like the tour dogs we are.

Two — The mighty HBO boxset. WIth both ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Wire’ in the van, we are immersed in the grit and determination of Baltimore narcotics cops and World War II soldiers. The incredible life force that keeps these characters going is the perfect example to extinguish any touring blues. Bit of cramp because leg room is scarce? Shut up, the trenches were a real situation. Can’t hear the stereo in the back? You are a pussy and not fit to eat crab cakes.

Three — ‘Rescue Mediums’. A brilliant TV show we saw in Toronto about two British women who work in the USA to exorcise spirits from haunted houses, and help uncover fourth dimensional mysteries. Employing their telepathy and downright excellent feminine intuition — you watch the clairvoyance unfold. Great — except for all the irritating adverts every ten minutes

Four — ALMONDS. Lots of vitamin D — very good for your skin in winter. It has been on the dressing room rider all month, but on our days off, if I don’t get some of those nuts, I’m just jitterry. Bring on those hairy little nuts.

Five — Fats Domino. We bought EODM a present from a gas station — a fluffy Dog who sings WHOLE LOTTA LOVING, and on the last beat of every bar, it’s ears fly up. You have to be there to appreciate it, but it is funny. Love that song now.
